Trick of the Month - May 2008

Card at Any Number (Impromptu) by Barrie Richardson For me this is a new all time favourite I think. This is a really practical solution to the card at any number plot which can be done with any (borrowed) deck and no preparation. There are a couple of moves which are within reach of anyone with any basic card skills, and as with all Barrie’s stuff it is routined to perfection! Highliy recommended. £14.99
Magic Of Mark Leveridge Vol 3 (General Magic) Mark Leveridge always produces commercial magic, and this DVD includes 9 of his routines. I am particularly highlighting it this month because it is on special at the moment at only £12.34.
WD40 By Wayne Dobson I’m reading this at the moment and enjoying it very much. Firstly you have Wayne’s autobiographgy which is a really interesting read in itself. Find out how he reached the success he has done and also how he has battled with MS. And as if that was not enough, it includes 40 of his routines (hence WD40) which are always practical and straightforward. If you have any of the Dobson’s Choice booklets there is quite a bit of overlap, but some new ideas too. A great book. £25.99.

Neat and Tidy - Rubber Bands - By Wayne Fox I love tricks with Rubber Bands, because they are such an everyday item. You still have to go a long way to beat the original ‘Crazy-Man’s Handcuffs’ routine. But this new idea from Wayne Fox seems like the ‘logical’ climax to a rubber band act - great cisual magic as a pile of rubber bands visually turn into a rubber band ball. £24.99
No Card Tricks - Jay Sankey Continuing the theme of non-card magic, here is a DVD from Jay Sankey which is on SPECIAL at the moment - reduced from £19.99 to only £7.05! Full of magic with coins and matches etc. Well worth a look.
Pocket Space - by Tony Miller I think I’ve said before that I’m fascinated with the Any Card at Any Number plot. This is a different take on that idea which eliminates all the dealing out of cards and takes up almost no space in your pocket as the ‘deck’ is printed on a business card in your pocket. (there’s a very positive review on TM) £17.99.

The Magic of Ascanio Volume 1 If you’re serious about your magic, then you must think about how you present it. This is a book by one of the Greats of magic with his thoughts on creativity, presentation, timing, misdirection etc. A wonderful book and a bargain at the moment as it is currently reduced to £20.00 (normally £36.00)
(Another good alternative to this if you want to think about how to turn a “trick” into a “miracle” is Darwin Ortiz’s Strong Magic by Darwin Ortiz - Book at £29.99)
Dramatic Envelope by Katsuya Masuda From the creator of the incredibly visual WOW comes a striking mental item. Don’t be deceived by the poor title (!) this is a very direct mental item as your wallet contains the ESP card chosen by the spectator. £29.99
The Domino Effect - (Domino Card) This one’s a nice idea for a bar trick, because it contains a gag and some magic all in one. Predicting the spots arranged by the spectator on a domino is the basic effect - click through for more. £12.99

Enchanted Cube - By Fooler Doolers & Daryl There seems to have been a lot of interest in the instantly solved Rubik’s cube recently. This is Daryl’s version which is very good. £23.99
(NB Enchanted Cube can’t be handed out after it has been solved. If you want that feature, you will need Insta-Cube which is £44.99)
This is a nice kind of ‘Triumph’ effect, but without the sleight of hand. A gaff deck does all the work for you. In effect, 2 cards are selected and returned into a deck which has been cut in half and place face to face. The cards are returned to the box and a ‘Chaos’ button is pressed and all the cards come out mixed up. At a press of the ‘Order’ button, the cards are all righted apart from the selected cards. Follow the link to watch the video. Only £14.99

<A Dream of Aces by Gary Ouellet (BOOK & DVD SET) I recently saw a very nicely done performance of this trick (you can watch the video here) and think it is very effective. David Copperfield has use it on his specials. And the beauty of it all is that it is not very difficult with the gaff cards included. This comes with DVD AND fully illustrated instructions. £21.99
Continuing with the Ace Magic theme, this one from David Regal has a very simple premise. The spectator cuts to the Aces. Easy to do, and a snip at £11.99
Classic Magic-The Larry Jennings To finish off the Aces trilogy here is the Larry Jennings DVD. We’ve mentioned his book before - he is one of the all time masters of card magic - and here you can learn with him on DVD. Includes several Ace routines, the Ambitious Classic, and much more wonderful card magic. £24.99.

Semi-Automatic Card Tricks - Volumes 1-5 I recently got my hands on one of these volumes and have been very impressed. In addition to being full of lots of great (and not too difficult!) card magic, Steve Beam writes in an amusing and conversational way. There are cameo sketches of the various contributors and lots of insight into the development of particular routines. Highly Recommended! £29.99/volume
Here is a new take on the classic colour changing deck routine with a kicker ending. And best of all, it virtually works itself… £14.99
The T&R Project - By Huron Low (2 DVD SET) The Torn and Restored card is one of those effects which has real appeal for both magicians and laypeople. This 2 DVD set brings an incredible visual edge to effect which none of the slow gradual restoration of the standard plot. Click through for the full description. Incredible visual magic. £52.99 (2 DVD set)

4 x Four By David Forrest DVD We have raved before about David Forrest’s work, and the production values from BBM are also very high. 4 of a Kind tricks are very popular with magicians, and this teaches 8 different ways of producing 4 of a kind, some false cuts etc Great value at £14.99.
If you like strong mentalism then you’ll like this one from John Kennedy. Spread a deck of cards face up on the table and ask a spectator to look at any card. No one else could possibly know the card because he never touches or names it. You concentrate, then slowly but surely “read his mind” and name the card! Now produced in Bicycle Red Rider backs. No memory work. Looks like real magic! £22.99
DAI VERNON BOOK OF MAGIC (Hardcover) Our classic of magic this month is the Dai Vernon book of magic. Beautiful, classic magic in a wonderful hard-bound edition. There’s cards, coins, cups and balls, etc. etc. It doesn’t get much better than this. £27.99.

Bang On - By Mark Oberon I am slightly obsessed with the your card in my wallet effect at the moment and Mark Oberon’s ideas are always practical. Bang On seems to be a good solution to the problem. £69.99
Showmanship for Magicians Dariel Fitzkee’s 3 classic books on the theory of magic have gone down in history. Showmanship for Magicians is the definitive work on this vital aspect of the magician’s trade. £17.50
Aunt Mary's Terrible Secret Aunt Mary’s Terrible Secret is an entire gambling themed card routine which requires no difficult slight of hand, from the professional repertoire of David Williamson. £23.99.

Oddball - Marc Oberon Something a bit different this week. I recently acquired Marc Oberon’s ‘Oddball’ and it is a very good bit of magic. A straightforward method (which with a little thought could be extended to different ideas) allowing you to focus on presentation Mental magic is so popular at the moment - this might be a good way to introduce it to your act. £14.99
STRIP - By Jon Thompson (Plus Free Bicycle Stripper Deck) The team responsible for all the good DVDs coming from David Forrest have produced this DVD all about the Stripper Deck. The ‘Stripper’ is often overlooked as ‘beginners’ magic, but in this DVD, Jon Thompson takes an up to date look at what is possible with this subtlest of tools, and is bound to get you using yours again! (Includes free Bicycle Stripper Deck) £22.99
Beyond Secrets - Jay Sankey If you are new to magic and only interested in new ’secrets’ you may overlook this. But Jay Sankey has more experience than most in the art of performing and creating magic, and here is some of his thinking about the whole nature of magical performance, and most importantly - how to make yours better! £19.99.

In The Beginning There Were Coins - DVD If your skill with Cards gets you something of a reputation as a magician, it is important to make sure you can meet that demand to ’show us a trick.’ We nearly always have coins on us, and so being able to master the basics of coin magic will stand you in good stead to perform impromptu. There is also something constantly appealing about tricks with money. This DVD covers all the basics and comes highly recommended. £19.99
Amazing Miracles Of Shigeo Takagi - Book This is quite simply the BEST book on Magic I have ever had the pleasure of reading. It has been out of print for ages so I am delighted it is back in stock again. Takagi provides some of the most beautiful magic you will ever see - there is loads here with silks, ropes, cards, etc. etc. His totally unique handling of the Wild Card routine is wonderful and there is loads of other very commercial effective magic. Brilliant! £29.99
BIGGER Finish - Jay Sankey Jay Sankey is a really creative guy who comes up with some novel concepts in magic. In this one 4 cards melt into one jumbo card matching the spectator’s earlier choice. And it all happens in the spectator’s hand. £13.99.
